Services
This Museum covers all aspects of North Devon's history from the invasion of the Danes in 878 to present day shipbuilding.
Subjects include our seafaring past and present, with models and photographs of sail, steam and motor ships, the Tudor period of Grenville and the Armada, the Newfoundland fishing trade, emigration, smuggling, shipbuilding, rope making, coopering, wreck & rescue and World War II activities in North Devon.
Guide boards in Dutch, German, French & Spanish.
Victorian Schoolroom for schools and other groups, where children (and adults) can be given a Victorian experience, dressing in Victorian costume, singing hymns accompanied by the harmonium, reciting tables, writing on slates with slate crayons, complete with headmistress and cane! Quiz sheets for children.
Large archive of reference books, copies of Custom House records for Bideford, Barnstaple and Ilfracombe from 1786 to 1900, Mariners Mirror and Sea Breezes, documents, several photographic collections - all available by appointment only.
Laptops allowed, but not scanners.
Outstation of the NDRO with Parish Records and Tithe Maps on fiche also available by appointment.
Friends of North Devon Museum Trust, with annual Newsletter and local history journal, North Devon Heritage, filled with articles, all on subjects relating to North Devon.

From Barnstaple or North Cornwall, take the A39 to Bideford. At the roundabout on the Bideford side of Torridge Bridge follow the signs to Appledore. Half way down main hill in Appledore, Museum brown sign to the left. Having turned carpark immediately on right, opposite the Museum.
