Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is running a special event for all ages called ‘Archaeology’s Alive’ on Saturday 12 July as part of the British Festival of Archaeology

The free event, which will run from 11am to 3pm will feature a range of different drop-in style activities, all of which are designed to highlight the importance of archaeology or the study of human activity in the past.

Visitors will be able to see a special foyer case display and help students from Plymouth College of Art road test a new archaeology-themed computer game they are developing.

They can also try a quiz in the ‘Uncovered’ gallery, which features highlights from the Museum and Art Gallery’s permanent collections, and handle real objects and chat to volunteers on one of the Discovery Desks.

The Museum and Art Gallery will be hosting a significant archaeology exhibition from 13 September to 13 December called ‘Whitehorse Hill: A Prehistoric Dartmoor Discovery’. The show, which is being produced in partnership with the Dartmoor National Park Authority, will feature some amazing Bronze Age discoveries that are older than Stonehenge and which were found in a remote spot on Dartmoor.

Visitors to the ‘Archaeology’s Alive’ event will be able to get a sneak preview of this significant exhibition courtesy of some fun family-friendly arts and crafts activities. They will also be able to watch clips from a recent BBC documentary called ‘Mystery of the Moor’ which looks at the story behind the discovery.

‘Archaeology’s Alive’ is free with no need to book in advance. People are welcome to come along for as little or as long as they like.
