The Museum is delighted to showcase this Inspirational display of unique and remarkable artworks, created by pupils from Pathfield Special School, one of North Devon's most popular and inspiring schools.

Based in Barnstaple, Pathfield is a special school for 122 pupils, aged between 3 and 19 years of age, with profound and severe physical, learning, communication and interaction difficulties, including autism. In addition to the curriculum art classes, the school runs a number of lunchtime, and afterschool art club.

This is the school’s 5th art exhibition, but the first one to be held at the Museum, and confirms the popularity of the pupils’ artwork which will be on display until the 30th May 2015.

The exhibition aims to demonstrate the imaginative and inspiring work produced by children and young adults with severe, profound and complex needs; and to highlight their remarkable talents, imagination and artistic skills.

Pathfield School’s headteacher Claire May says:

“Our pupils produce such amazing and creative artwork. This exhibition demonstrates what can be achieved through determination, dedication and skill, as our pupils have to overcome many difficulties to achieve their creations. The exhibition addresses issues of identity, inclusion and diversity and is the culmination of creative classroom activities and afterschool art club work. The artwork produced shows a great level of skill from all involved, and demonstrates what can be achieved with creative thinking and dedicated teaching.  Art is a powerful tool for encouraging new ways of thinking and it helps promote pupil learning, engagement and personal growth. We are proud to be working with the Barnstaple Museum to showcase this work.”

It is hoped that the achievements of these pupils will be recognised through the sale of these pieces of artwork – with proceeds from any sale going towards the School’s new Soft Play Room.

The exhibition runs until 30th May 2015 and Admission is FREE
