Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo

The 'last castle to be built in England', set above the Teign Gorge with dramatic views over Dartmoor. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe.

It is currently undergoing an extensive conservation project which will last until 2018. The inside of the castle has been completely redisplayed with installations, open storage areas and the opportunity to get up close to the building work by climbing up the viewing tower (restrcitions apply).

  • Frances Richardson, Mrs Julius Drewe (1871 - 1954)

This oil painting of Frances by Charles Martin Hardie shows her in her younger years in the rose garden at Wadhurst Hall and it is very clear that she must have been a very beautiful woman. No wonder Julius fell in love with her.

  • Julius Charles Drewe (1856-1931)

This oil painting shows Julius in the year of his death in 1931.
