About Us

Crediton Area History And Museum Society

The Society was founded in September 1984 to advance public education in the history of Crediton and the surrounding area by means of talks, exhibitions, meetings etc. as well as the provision of a museum.

In April 2010 our museum was opened at The Old Town Hall in the centre of Crediton High Street. The museum is run by volunteers and plans two separate exhibitions each year.

In addition, monthly lectures are held, usually at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, and visits to places of historic importance and occasional social events are organised.

Museum open from 18th April

The Crediton Museum is open again for the summer. This year the central feature of our exhibition is the map and model of the High street and Market town in 1742 before it was destroyed by the fire of 1743.

We also have displays celebrating the Jubilee.

From July we hope to have Civil War and other items on loan from the Church Governors on display.

Our Collections

Most of the Society’s archive is housed, by kind permission of the family of the Boer War hero, General Sir Redvers Buller, at their home, the historic Downes, on the edge of the town. Access to this is by appointment only and material is usually brought to the museum in High Street for examination.

Our collection contains mostly documents, maps and postcards relating to the Crediton Area.
