Fishing for History researchers wanted! - The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon
By: Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon
Added: 15 May 2015
Fishing for History is a FLAG, HLF and North Devon AONB funded project based at the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon, which is looking at the fishing heritage of North Devon.
In July to September 2015 the Museum will be hosting an exhibition called 'Fishtival: celebrating fishing in North Devon' which highlights this often overlooked heritage.
We are currently looking for a person to research a range of themes linked to fishing in North Devon from the past into the present day. This research will form the basis of the content included in the 'Fishtival' exhibition panels, as well as a publication that will be launched towards the end of 2015.
In addition to this position we are also looking for a knitting researcher!
In the last few years there has been a nationwide knitting revival and a resurgence of interest in fisherman's jerseys. The Museum has been working with community knitting trainer Josephine Sims to revive the skills of knitting the Appledore Fisherman's Jerseys, locally known as 'frocks'. It is envisaged that the research will culminate in a revised republication about the knitted ganseys of North Devon, including historical photographs, and feature in a knitting pack that will be for sale at museums and heritage sites in the local area.
If you would like to find out more about either, or both, of these research posts then please contact Anita Nathwani the Fishing for History Project Coordinator.
