Come along to a packed day of presentations that celebrate and explore Plymouth’s maritime, social and archival heritage.

9.15am: Housekeeping and Welcome with Mark Tosdevin
9.25am: Local Studies Across the City – News update on City Council heritage activities and projects.
9.45am: Sir Francis Chichester: Devonian, Pioneer Aviator and Solo Yachtsman – Marking the 50th anniversary of the completion of his famous voyage, Giles Chichester reflects on his father’s Devon roots and highlights some less well known-aspects of his life story.
10.30am: Tea/Coffee
11am: Victorian Plymouth: A Photographic Tour of the Three Towns and Surrounding Neighbourhood – Picking-up from his first ‘As Time Draws On’ volume (1991), Chris Robinson returns with a fresh look at the local area but this time as seen through a wide variety of 19th century camera lenses.
12pm: Dead Interesting – Stories of life and death for some of the more interesting residents of Ford Park Cemetery, with Dr Ian Hodgins.
12.30pm: Lunch
1.40pm: Time Traveller’s Guide to Restoration Britain – Journey back to the period 1660-1699 with historian and bestselling author Dr Ian Mortimer. What was life really like in the age of King Charles II, Dryden, Newton and Pepys?
2.40pm: Tea/Coffee
3.10pm: Strolling Round the Hoe: Plymouth and Traditional Song – Devon based musicians Andy Clarke and Sam Richards with songs about local places and events and stories of song collecting and collectors.
4pm: Plymouth Past on Film – Footage from the South West Film and Television Archive and stills from the South West Image Bank, with a focus on our relationship with the sea and coast. Selected and presented by Stacey Anderson.
4.30pm: Close

During the day, local groups can display exhibitions on local history highlighting their current projects. To discuss and book exhibitor tables, please email your requirements to venuehire@plymouth.gov.uk (Subject: LSDAY2017 / DISPLAY) by 21 April 2017. Display spaces are limited, but we will do our best to accommodate you.
Publications may be offered for sale on the day. All groups will be responsible for the sale of their own items.
Local Studies Day is organised by Plymouth City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service, in partnership with the Library Service, Plymouth University, Peninsula Arts and the Old Plymouth Society.
