Maintenance works at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon start next week (Monday 29 September), although the building will remain open to visitors as usual.

The £176,000 project will see external works being carried out, including the restoration of stonework and weather-proofing, such as repairs to the gutters, roof and windows. Meanwhile, inside the building, there will be re-wiring, door replacements, removal of partition walls and new heating being installed.

Councillor Derrick Spear, Executive Member for Culture, says: "The works to the exterior of the building have been needed for some time and I'm very pleased to see this project getting underway. This major investment by the authority will ensure that both the building and its contents are looked after and protected for the enjoyment of future generations.

"Inside the building, work will ensure that the offices and other staff areas are upgraded to meet all health and safety requirements. It will also make it a better working environment for our dedicated team of staff and volunteers, who are especially pleased to have a heating system installed for the coming winter."

The works are expected to take around 10 weeks to complete. Although disruption will be kept to a minimum, with most internal work taking place in back-office areas, it may be necessary to close one public area for a few days. Notice of this partial closure will be given in advance.
