Plymouth City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service, the Real Ideas Organisation and Visual Arts Plymouth have joined forces to support two local artists’ involvement in this year’s Plymouth Art Weekender.

The three organisations are holding a ‘SOUP’ event at Ocean Studios, Royal William Yard on Thursday 29 June from 7.30pm. During the event four artists or artists groups will be invited to pitch their projects to an audience from the local community.

Everyone in the audience will get the chance to vote for their favourite project. The two with the highest number of votes will each receive a small grant of £500 plus 50% of the takings on the door so they can run an event during the Art Weekender.

The Plymouth Art Weekender is an ambitious three day event that will take place across the city from 22-24 September. The Weekender celebrates Plymouth’s visual arts scene and aims to promote the city as an exciting contemporary art destination with exhibitions, activities and commissions by local, national and international artists.

SOUP is a concept that was established in Detroit, USA in 2010. It brings people together for a simple meal and the chance to determine which projects and ideas in their community or city receive funding.

If you’d like to be in the audience on Thursday 29 June you can book your ticket via Eventbrite. Tickets are £5 per person and entitle you to soup, bread, salad and a vote. The evening will also include a set by popular local band ‘Double Denim’.

If you’re a local artist or arts collective and would like to pitch your project at the event please apply via www.plymouthsoup.org by Sunday 25 June. If you are selected you will be notified by Tuesday 27 June. On the night you will have 4 minutes to make your pitch without the use of electronic presentation equipment and will then be asked up to 4 questions by the audience.
