The next  in the South Devon Railway Museum’s popular series of Thursday meetings, and the first for this winter season, is on 29 September 2016 in the Buckfastleigh Town Hall. The speaker will be John Ellis, from the Stover Canal Trust. He will be giving an illustrated presentation about the Stover Canal past and present, and will feature the current work of the Society in restoring sections of it.

The Stover Canal Society was formed in 1999 to promote the preservation and restoration of the Stover Canal. Built in the 18th Century, the canal was used for nearly 150 years to transport clay and other materials from the Bovey Basin and granite from quarries on Dartmoor to the docks at Teignmouth.

The society has merged with the Stover Canal Trust which works with local councils and other interested parties to preserve the line of the canal and to restore it as an amenity for the local community. Some lengths of the canal towpath form part of the Templer Way, a historic trail which links the canal, the tramway and other legacies of the Templer family.

The show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7.00pm. After 6.00pm car parking is free in Victoria Woodholme and Mardle Way, and light refreshments are available. There is no charge for entry – we look forward to seeing you there.
