Expert speakers are having a busy time during 2012 with so many centenaries and anniversaries being marked by museums nationwide.

Author Meredith Hooper visited Fairlynch in 2011 on her way back from the Scott 100 celebrations in Plymouth and has been invited to speak at an event in Budleigh later this year.

Her book The Longest Winter focusing on Scott's Northern Party was published in 2010 and appeared in the USA last October to critical acclaim. Praised by The New York Times for its "thrilling account" of how former Budleigh resident Murray Levick and his five companions were abandoned to the savage ordeal of an Antarctic winter the book is described as "a tale of survival that rivals that of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance."    

In a week's time Meredith Hooper will be speaking at London's Natural History Museum on the nature of heroism and celebrity in connection with Captain Robert Falcon Scott. 'Do we naturally need heroes?' is the title of the event on Friday 27 January from 7.00 - 9.00 pm. Along with author Andrew Morton she will consider questions such as 'What will our modern-day celebrities be remembered for in 2112?'
