Ranked among the finest in South West England and Designated as an outstanding collection in 2016, Torquay Museum is a journey of discovery for all ages. Experience the sights and sounds of country living as you walk through a reconstructed Devon farmhouse from 1860, wonder at the prehistoric artefacts excavated from nearby Kent's Cavern or become an explorer on our interactive trail.

In the Agatha Christie gallery, detect the real-life story behind the world-famous crime writer, who was born in Torquay.There's a programme of temporary exhibitions as well as children's activities during the school holidays.

  • The Explorers Gallery

    For over 160 years Torbay's explorers have travelled the world - from the frozen wastes of the Antarctic to the depths of the Brazilian rainforest.

  • The Egyptology Collection

    Egyptomania forms part of the Explorers Gallery, an exhibition of 'wonderful things' for all ages, it includes a mummified boy from about 500 BC, a painted wooden coffin from the New Kingdom and a Shabti figure from the tomb of Seti I, as well as pottery, jewellery and textiles.

  • The Prehistory Collections

    Much of the archaeology housed in the Museum comes from the prehistoric settlement of South Devon. Visitors can see the highlights of our Designated Collection including the earliest evidence of modern humans in Britain.

  • The Laycock Collection of Rural Life

    Experience the sights and sounds of country living as you walk through our Devon Farmhouse Gallery when you take a walk through our reconstructed 1860's Devon farmhouse.

  • The Agatha Christie Collection

    The Agatha Christie Gallery is your chance to detect the real life story behind the world-famous crime writer who was born in Torquay.

The Museum is usually open throughout the year. Easy access to the Museum and all the public galleries and facilities is provided via a ramp, lift and chair lift. We offer an enquiry and identification service and researchers are welcome by prior arrangement. Special guided tours for group visits are encouraged. There is object handling and sensory experiences for the visually impaired.
