St Peter's Fair, Holsworthy July 5th to 13th 2008 - a week of traditional celebrations. From: Sat 5th Jul 2008 To: Sun 13th Jul 2008
The ancient Court Leet meets on the evening of Tuesday 8th followed by the Ale tasting Ceremony around the local public houses.
On Wednesday 9th July (Fair Day) the celebrations start at 8.00am with the reading of the Fair proclamation by the Town Crier on the site of Holsworthy's Great Tree. We then move across the road to the Bread weighing and after this, all the children present are given tickets for a free breakfast. The main event of the day is the Pretty Maid Ceremony. Crowds wait outside the church's Belfry Door to await the presentation at 12 noon. Last year it was the turn of Gemma Isaac from Hollacombe.
During the week there will be live music in the Square on each weekday evening, Rowlands Fun Fair in the Manor car park, and interesting displays in both the church of St Peter & St Paul, and in the Methodist church in Bodmin Street. Various other activities are taking place (see the Fair programme or Peter Peter & Wrights window for more details).
As part of the celebrations, the Museum will be displaying photographs of some of Holsworthy's old buildings which, unfortunately, are no longer in existence.
