The Documentary Photography Open 2025 is an exhibition of photographs submitted by the public in response to the theme, Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals: merrymaking and revelry in North Devon.

This year, we asked entrants to reflect on the community spirit and unique atmosphere of North Devon’s celebrations, including events such as Barnstaple Fair and of course, the return of Barnstaple Carnival. The photographs submitted are exhibited alongside historical photographs by James Ravilious.

During the exhibition, you’re invited to cast your vote to select the winning entry of the Documentary Photography Open 2025. The winner will be announced at the end of the exhibition.

The annual Open aims to provide a platform for everyone with an interest in photography – from camera phone enthusiasts to established contemporary photographers. It hopes to inspire photographers, offer valuable exposure, and help keep the tradition of photography alive in North Devon.

The call-out for submissions to take part in next year’s Open – centring around the theme of Families – will take place towards the end of year. Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more information.
