Be transported to lands both near and far in this evocative exhibition which explores the theme of place. It features important works from RAMM’s fine art collection from the 18th century to the late 20th century.

Artists through the centuries have sought to capture the characteristics that make a place special and unique.

In the 17th and 18th centuries many artists travelled to Italy as a part of their Grand Tour. They were drawn by the promise of illustrating an ideal classical landscape influenced by antiquity. Artists such as Thomas Patch migrated to Italy making a living from painting views of Florence and Tivoli. The exhibition also features important paintings by Francis Towne and Samuel Prout.

Later works chart the 19th-century development of the modern landscape with the emergence of Impressionism and its emphasis upon painting outdoors from nature. Works such as Frederick Goodall’s painting Pastoral Scene near Cairo, Evening highlight the development of the 19th-century Orientalist painting tradition that saw western artists depicting aspects of the eastern world.

20th-century works include Aubrey William’s vibrant oil painting Bonampak (number 17) with elements of abstract expressionism. Works by Albert Moulton Foweraker are also featured, exploring the effect of light upon the landscape.
