Created by internationally-acclaimed photographer Michelle Sank, Breathe is an exhibition of work that documents the first Covid-19 lockdown in the Wonford area of Exeter.
This series is a poignant visual record of individual and shared experiences of social isolation under lockdown. It explores how people negotiated their own predicaments, their relationships to each other, as well as their interaction with private and nearby public spaces.
Alongside the portraits of residents, the decoration of their homes, in Sank's words, 'took on a new sense of relevance. Having previously gone unnoticed as part of my everyday urban landscape, they became symbolic references to the presence and fragility of life and death in unsettling times.'
This new series of photographs was acquired by RAMM through the Contemporary Art Society's Rapid Response Fund in Summer 2020.
Sank is continuing to produce work within the community.
