Torquay Museum has officially launched its new archive enquiry service. The Museum has been trialling ways of keeping its archive collections accessible for the last few years and is now launching this service, which it hopes will meet the needs of a modern audience while keeping items accessible to all. The Museum holds around 70,000 archive items including photographs, lithographs, lantern slides, glass negatives, manuscripts, letters and documents. This huge collection has both locally and nationally important items. From early photographs of Torquay to a Designated archive relating to the quaternary caves of South Devon, the archive is of interest to a wide range of researchers from visitors to local historians and businesses and academics. Enquires to the archive are charged at £16 per hour for general searches, there are additional costs for providing scans and copies of images or documents. The Museum can also scan and enhance old photographs and provide advice on old documents. The Museum also has a substantial local studies library including many local directories and can undertake some local research for this fee.
