The Museum, the only one within the Dartmoor National Park, is in the centre of the town and is open from May 1st to September 30th. The town car park is close by.

Make sure you arrive in good time to do justice to the Museum for it covers three floors.  Whilst every effort is being made to help those with a disability the layout with steep narrow stairs is not suitable for wheelchair access, and the building is too small for a lift, but there is plenty to see on the ground floor. The staff are able to describe the exhibits on the other floors and the Museum is producing a video covering all exhibits. 

The Museum is very small and is situated in a small, listed, house much of which dates from the 17th century. It has no shop or toilets.  However Ashburton is a small town and shops and cafes are within an easy level walk.  Toilets, including facilities for the disabled and nappy changing, are within a 50 metre walk.

The Museum is run by volunteers and while its exhibits concentrate on Ashburton and the surrounding areas of Dartmoor, it does have a collection of North American Indian artefacts given to the Museum by a prominent American, who was descended from an Ashburton family, part of whom settled in America in the 1890s.
