Barnstaple Heritage Centre is housed in the grade I and II listed "Queen Anne's Walk" building on the riverfront. This beautiful building was once a merchant's walkway (the Great Quay once cut in in front of the collonade). In 1709 the fancy stonework and statue of Queen Anne was added. The building behind the Colonnade, now housing our shop and exhibition, was built in the 1850s and has been used as a baths & wash-house, a masonic lodge and a day-centre. This important building has now been given a new lease of life as Barnstaple Heritage Centre. The new Strand Promenade with its fantastic mosaic and stylish cafe/restaurant is well worth a visit too!

A warm welcome awaits visitors to the centre, whether visiting the exhibition or browsing in the gift shop. This picture was taken on the first anniversary of the Heritage Centre opening (the Centre opened in September 1998). A wide and imaginitive range of gifts, books and souvenirs is available in the shop, which is accessible separately to the exhibition. The shop also acts as a reception to the exhibition - come along and see us!
