Find out about: Exmouth Museum

About Us

Exmouth Museum

Exmouth Museum was first opened in 1985 and is housed in a 19th century building which was the Council Stables together with the adjoining foreman's cottage. It is now divided into three galleries, two on the ground floor and one on the first floor.

The museum is seen end on from the road making it appear a lot smaller than it really is.

We show various aspects of Exmouth's past including Local Businesses, Wartime, Children's toys, School Photos and artefacts, Railways, Local Bricks, Antique Lace and Exmouth Commemorative China.

For the children we have Quiz Sheets and our ever popular 'Find the Cat' trail.

Our Collections

The Museum reflects Exmouth's rich social history and includes:

The development of the town into a seaside resort, docks and railways, Victorian kitchen, 1930's dining room, children's toys and antique bobbin lace.

Quiz sheets are available for young visitors.

In addition to our displays we have Press Cuttings, books and other files available for visitors to browse.

Clock Tower

The clock tower was erected to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign and stands prominently on the seafront. Originally wound by hand by a Council employee the mechanism was replaced. The original mechanism is on display and working in the Museum.

Clapps Cafe

Situated on the corner of Rolle Street and the Strand Gardens this was a favourite meeting place for Exmothians. Alas it is now a Mobile Phone shop!
