A Review of the New Year Party for the Friends of the Devonshire Collection of Period Costume 2015! On Sunday 1st February 2015 at 3pm, the Friends celebrated the New Year with a short talk, given by Julia Fox, on historic hair styles & accessories. This was followed by Gill Goddard, and her daughter, Hannah, demonstrating a 60’s hairstyle & discussing haircutting & styling techniques through to present day.! Gill Goddard talked about the influence of celebrities on fashion & hairstyles, for instance Jackie ‘O’, Mia Farrow & Twiggy on the 60’s. There was a 20’s revival in the early 70’s with the release of the film ‘The Great Gatsby’ & then later that decade Farrah Fawcett-Majors (a member of ‘Charlie’s Angels’) inspired the next wave of fashionable hair styles. Olivia Newton-John also had an impact on the styles of the 70’s.!
Gill, having read Vidal Sasson's biography, told us a little about him. He had revolutionized the cutting process with the development of the ‘a, b, c method’ in the 1960’s. He worked out how to cut architecturally around the head & apply to every shape of head & variety of hair. He favored straight hair & still to this day, the Vidal Sasson brand is very particular about the models they use to advertise their cuts, styles & products.! |
