Teignmouth is beautiful. It is not, however, just a pretty place! A product of a turbulent past and the strivings of succeeding generations, Teignmouth has a colourful and absorbing story to tell. The story is told in the Museum - what happened, when and who the players were. About the sea and the land, of war and of peace, of interactions with far-off places and the development of domestic industries. It tells of heroes who shaped the town, of Pellew, Brunel and Luny and of its people, whose legacy is ours to enjoy.
The Museum is directly opposite the Town's
Railway Station. Teignbridge District Council bought the derelict property in 1976 and renovated two floors of it to house the Museum, which first opened its doors in 1978. In 1993 the Council reconstructed the top floor and completely refurbished the whole building
This anchor was dredged up in 1983, accidentally, by the visiting ship M.V."Torbay". Captain Jensen kindly presented the anchor to the Teignmouth Museum on 27th January 1983 as he considered it to be an excellent example of the skills of the early iron-masters.
The museum is planning to have an extension built in the very near future and the building will greatly enlarge our display space. We are excited about the prospect which will enable all who visit to see more of our fantastic collections (some of which have had to be 'put in mothballs') - all of which are of great interest to people of all ages.
We have formed a company limited by guarantee - Teign Heritage - to deal with the fundraising strategies for our extension. Company Number - 5874265. Charity Number - 1116204.
