Braunton and District Museum

The Bakehouse Centre was specially converted from a former bakehouse and two cottages to house today's Museum. Museum Staff are pleased to welcome visitors and offer a guided tour if requested.

A printed guide to the collection is also available.

  • Braunton Railway

    Very popular working model layout of the station as it would have been in the 1950s. Recently the Parish Council have sited a series of information and display boards around the village which tell the story of the railway, before Mr Beeching wielded his axe.

  • Military History

    Displays spanning the two world conflicts. The training that took place on the "Burrows" in 1943/4 was instrumental in the winning of the battle for Normandy. A Heritage Lottery grant in 2009 enabled the museum to tell the story of the historic importance of the area.

  • Henry Williamson

    Henry Williamson: This display is based in a prominent part of the museum - the vestibule. Photographs and information on the local writer of Tarka the Otter fame.

  • Great Field & Agricultural Collection (currently on loan to Braunton Countryside Centre)

    The Fiddle: Used manually for broadcast seed sowing. A bow was used in conjunction with the fiddle, it was carried underarm with a harness around the opposite shoulder, the bow was inserted through the base of the fiddle and used in a side to side movement which scattered the seed

  • Braunton's maritime heritage

    From February 2012, alongside the existing diorama of Vellator Quay, there is a new interactive multimedia display showing interviews with 2 old mariners. Many model vessels made by Sam Mitchell are on display along with a variety of maritime artefacts.

Parking with toilets in adjacent car park.

The Museum is situated next to a large, car park. There is disabled access and a stair lift to the first floor with a folding wheelchair available. A small shop with gifts, souvenirs and local history booklets. Postal book service available. Limited local and family history research undertaken from our indexed transcriptions of the Parish Registers of St. Brannock's Church, Braunton and the 1841-1901 census returns for Braunton. Facilities available, by appointment, for personal research plus Group bookings, Film shows, talks and quizzes.
