Castle Drogo
Where dramatic architecture meets innovative family home, this 20th century castle overlooking the Teign Gorge was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England.
Following a recent major conservation project to address water penetration, the castle is now re-displayed to showcase its precious treasures, fascinating stories and unique history. This year our ‘Stored Secrets’ exhibition explores some of the hidden highlights from our stored collection of objects, and the potential stories that they can tell. You’ll see the work we do behind the scenes to develop and care for our collections, and the power and relevance they still have today to teach us about the past to shape our future. Outside the castle, stroll around the formal gardens, alive with colour throughout the seasons. Or explore the Teign Valley with its ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife. There's a variety of routes to suit all abilities. No visit is complete without a stop to recharge in the coffee shop, serving traditional Devon cream teas and many more seasonal and locally sourced options.
