Crediton Area History And Museum Society

Crediton Area History And Museum Society

In April 2010 our museum was opened at The Old Town Hall in the centre of Crediton High Street. The museum is run by volunteers and each year plans a separate exhibition, open from April to October.

In addition, monthly lectures are held, usually at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, and visits to places of historic importance and occasional social events are organised. In 2013 a Research Corner was added to enable visitors to research their family or house history. This facility, a Service Point for Devon Heritage Centre, is usually open on Wednesday mornings (other times are possible) but please contact us in advance.

  • April Great Market in High Street c1900

The Society has an extensive archive of postcards and photographs. Some of these have been reproduced in the the form of cards and notelets which can be purchased from the museum. This image is one of many showing the market that was held in the High Street every year until 1952.

  • Spurway's Almshouses built in 16th century

Humphrey Spurway died in 1555 and left money in his will for houses for the poor of Crediton.

  • Extract from 18th century map of the town.

We have a collection of maps mainly dating from the late 19th C, but including our prized hand drawn copy of the 1598 Norden map of Crediton, and a copy of the 1742 map of West Crediton, annotated with 1743 fire info (shown here). Both the latter are available in the museum.

  • Town Model

This model is on permanent display in the museum and depicts the High Street as it was in the 18th Century, with the market buildings in the middle of the street. The buildings were copied from the images shown on the map.

  • WW1 research

In 2013, with the help of local village groups, we began a program of research into the lives of the local men who went to the war, and their families. This material formed the centrepiece of our 2014 exhibition. It is still available for inspection, and the research is ongoing.
