Devonport Naval Heritage Centre

The Devonport Naval Heritage Centre is a wholly volunteer run museum which records the development of The Dockyard and Plymouth’s pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy through war and peace. Through its collections, interactive experiences and pictorial interpretation the drama of the close relationship of Devonport, the Royal Navy, The Dockyard and the people of Plymouth can be explored.

Individual galleries cover: the Age of Sail, the Change from Sail to Steam and Steel, the Submarine Service (which includes a working periscope), both World Wars, Victualling the Navy, Uniforms and a Post War Model Ship Gallery (which includes a 14ft long model aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal).

  • Interactive display in the Age of Sail Gallery

    The Age of Sail Gallery contains models of many ships of the sailing navy, as well as telling the Navy's role in stopping the Slave Trade during the 19th Century. Other exhibits include the gun deck on a Man o' War and artefacts recovered from the wreck of HMS Coronation (1693)

  • Devonport Dockyard archives

    There are substantial and important archives relating to history of Devonport Dockyard, including details of Dockyard workers.

  • The Post War Model Ships Gallery

    The collection includes models of RN ships from 1950 onwards. The highlight is a 14ft long model of aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.

  • The working periscope in the Courageous Gallery

    The Courageous Gallery highlights the submarine service, its centrepiece is a fully working submarine periscope.

  • China from the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert

    In our Victualling Gallery, we have unique china from the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert. There is also a model of the Royal William Yard, rum tubs and measures. On the floor above is our uniform collection.

Admission & prices

It is open to all from the end of March to the end of October each year on every Wednesday and second Saturday of the month. Visitors can self tour or join a guided tour at 1100 each open day. It is open to booked group visits throughout the year. Booking can be made via email: enquiriesdnhc@gmail.com .
There is no formal admission charge. However a donation is requested to cover running costs.

Cafe provides hot drinks and basic snacks. The ground floor galleries are all wheel chair accessible. Other galleries can be view on a large TV in the cafe on request.
