The Devonport Naval Heritage Site and Visitor Centre records the development of The Dockyard and Plymouth’s pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy through major conflicts since 1300, including two World Wars. Through its collections, interactive experiences and pictorial interpretation the drama of the close relationship of Devonport, the Royal Navy, The Dockyard and the people of Plymouth can be explored.

The Devonport Naval Heritage Site and Visitor Centre includes The Naval Heritage Centre, the Duty Visit Ship, the decomissioned submarine‘Courageous’ and Naval Base Coach Tours.

  • Ships and historic ship figureheads

    HMS Courageous (Decomissioned Nuclear Submarine) Visit a 285ft (87m) long, 4300 ton, Churchill class, decomissioned nuclear submarine, the only exhibit of its kind in the UK. HMS Courageous provides a fascinating glimpse into the operational world of the ‘Silent Service’.

  • Devonport Dockyard archives

    There are substantial and important archives relating to history of Devonport Dockyard.

  • Naval stores, uniforms and medals

    The collection includes naval stores, uniforms, medals, badges, personal kit and also model ships.

  • Silver, china and kitchenware

    We also have silver, china and kitchenware, weights and measures and Royal Yacht china.

Admission & prices

It is open by appointment to groups of visitors (please note that we require 5 days notice for UK Nationals and 10 days for Foreign Nationals). Tours are conducted by RN Personnel and Civilian Volunteers. The free tours are available for Team-Building events and for public enjoyment. Our hospitality area includes a meeting/conference facility and a cafe serving light refreshment. These are available for group/business reservations.
