Compiled and edited by Christine Hardy. Illustrated by Brian Lewis.
In 1832 Elizabeth Barrett (Browning) stayed in Sidmouth for 3 years with her family. Her letters from that period are shown with explanatory details. She developed an unlikely friendship with a poor nonconformist minister who had the gift of inspired oratory. This well-researched and previously unexamined phase of the poet's life is brought to life and reveals the manners and culture in this small resort at that time. The drawings are delightful.
