A beautiful fan collection has generously been loaned to us by Gill Samuels and her family. Gill worked as a scientist and in policy and has been collecting beautiful things all her life.
The collection includes fans from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries of Japanese, Chinese and European origin.
The fans are made up of a frame, in wood, bone or mother of pearl, then a 'leaf' - the soft material of the fan - generally of silk but sometimes with feathers, and every inch of the fan is decorated in paintings, tassels, sequins, carvings and lace depending on the choice of the artist.
This exhibition is a beautiful and aesthetic temporary exhibit that displays the delicacy and variety of this fashion accessory.
