Holsworthy Museum

Holsworthy Museum

The museum is housed in part of a building which is in itself a museum piece; a small manor house dating from the 17th century which was used as a parsonage in 1724. There are five separate rooms, individually themed, which cover the history of Holsworthy, local tradesmen's tools, medical and apothecary items, World War II and a kitchen with its original cobbled floor, copper and fireplace.

The museum was completely refurbished in 1999 and an entrance porch built giving direct access to the museum from the town's main car park.

  • Railway

In the first room you will be able to trace the history of the Railway and see how important it was to Holsworthy. There are many photographs showing the building of Holsworthy's two viaducts and the opening ceremony when the town was decorated for the celebrations.

  • Kitchen items

In the kitchen there are many interesting items, some being relatively modern. There is also a small display of commemorative china.

  • Country crafts - thatcher, blacksmith, wheelwright

This small room, added in 1999, contains various tools of local tradesmen including those of the blacksmith, thatcher and wheelwright.

  • The War Room

Artefacts from the two World Wars show local involvement with the war effort. A mock-up of weekly rations is viewed by amazement by young children.

  • Medical and apothecary

Apothecary and various medical items form an interesting display. You can also find information on the old workhouse at Daw field and the story of how local doctor Stuart Craddock helped with the Discovery of Penicillin
