Rachael Allain: Epipelagic Drifters

Rachael Allain: Epipelagic Drifters

When: 16 November 2019 to 26 November 2019
Where: The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery Exeter
Suitable for: Any age

Totnes-based artist Rachael Allain’s film Epipelagic Drifters (16:35min) reveals planktonic life in the surface layer of Plymouth Sound through microscopic imaging techniques.

Rachael collected data with expert guidance from Senior Technician in Marine Biology, Richard Ticehurst, from Plymouth Sound. She recorded sound from under the water in the surface layer (epipelagic zone) adding audio recordings from world-leading marine scientists.

She says, “Plankton have been dominating the news recently as scientists have captured extraordinary footage of microscopic plankton ingesting micro plastics, highlighting the precarious nature of life on earth. I want to draw attention to the magnificence and beauty of these life giving ocean organisms”.
