Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse
SMEATON'S TOWER IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE WINTER AND WILL RE-OPEN IN SPRING 2026. A centrepiece on Plymouth’s Hoe, Smeaton’s Tower is one of the South West’s most well-known landmarks.
In use from 1759 to 1877, it was largely dismantled and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe in Plymouth, Devon, where it now stands as a memorial to its designer, John Smeaton, a celebrated civil engineer. Climb the 93 steps to the top for panoramic views of Plymouth Sound, the city and beyond. Look at the horizon on a clear day and spot the current Eddystone lighthouse. Get an insight into what life was like for the keepers who once lived in the lighthouse when it stood on the notorious Eddystone Reef, 14 miles out to sea.
