The achievements in Stephen Reynolds's short life were remarkable. He made the transition from a middle class science graduate to a skilful inshore fisherman. He was the author of a highly acclaimed book, A Poor Mans House. In the Great War he had the enormous responsibility of coordinating inshore fisheries in the south west and, at the same time, his radical ideas were credited with helping maintain the fisheries nationwide.
Although he was highly energetic and creative with a sharp sense of humour, there was a background of melancholia and psychosomatic illness. And in the intolerant Edwardian age, anxiety about his sexuality fuelled these symptoms.
