This lecture is in memory of our former chairman and president David Clement.
Dr James Davey of Exeter University Maritime department will be speaking about navel impressment. Used as a means of crewing warships, residents of seaports lived in fear of ‘press gangs’ pouncing on mariners in these communities. Often merchant ships were raided for men, so Topsham was always afraid of the ‘press gangs’ The navy was desperate for crew so recruitment by force had to be used.
A bar will be available before the lecture along with a selection on Museum publications.
lecture begins at 7.30 p.m. but doors open at 6.45 p.m.
