See a new presentation of drawings, etchings and films by artist duo Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings.
Their works are grounded in research into how various communities have been represented at different moments in history. The works are linked by ideas of power and authority, seen through the lens of class, social relations and the state.
Quinlan & Hastings continually produce thought-provoking work that establishes relationships between notions of belonging, institutional power and the safety of the LGBTQ+ community through lived experiences. In this exhibition they interrogate what a community is and investigate ideas of belonging and self-recognition.
In 2020/21 The Box acquired two important works by them - a diptych drawing and a video work. Both acquisitions will be on display. Although contemporary, they resonate with our historic collections – from the old master drawings in our Cottonian Collection and the films in our moving image archive, to the material we’ve been collecting over the last decade relating to the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
