As part of Hertiage Open Days 2026, Dartmoor Prison Museum will be conducting free guided tours to the two prisoner of war cemeteries at the rear of the prison. Dartmoor Prison was built to house prisoners from the wars with Napoleon and later on served to house US priosners from the little known War of 1812. During thsi time around 1500 prisoners died and they are commemorated in the tow cemeteries. This area is normally off limits to the general public or are organised as part of a pre-booked tour. The tour commences in the Museum car park and proceeds around the outside of the prison walls where you will hear some anecdotes about the prison itself before arriving at the cemeteries, where you will hear how and why they came about.
