This autumn sees the opening of our new exhibition, Made to Be Played: A Festival of Musical Instruments, which showcases and celebrates music-making around the world and through time. The range of instruments on display shows how music is universal to all cultures but also reflects local traditions, available materials, and its role in different societies.
Most of the display comes from two sources: Torquay Museum’s Daubeny Collection and the Exeter-based collection of private collector Ian Summers. As well as beautiful and unusual instruments, there are examples that are easy to build and play. We invite you to come and have a go – making and playing music is for everybody! There is also a full programme of associated events for various ages during the run of the exhibition. The programme will be available soon.
