Martha, Mesmeric subject. An installation by Amy Goodwin, laid out around the living van in which Martha Devey (nee Haslam) once traveled.
Martha was eldest daughter of 'Professor ' Anderton, the stage name of Albert Haslam, a conjuror and master showman.
At the age of 13, Martha began to assist her father in the aerial suspension trick, in which she would be mesmerised by her father and then levitate. On the census of 1891, at the age of 13, Martha gave her occupation as “mesmeric subject “.
She went on to run the families fair.
