Step into the world of Roman Exeter and discover the story of Isca.

Join us in exploring RAMM’s captivating Roman collection, where our friendly volunteer guides will invite you to handle real and replica Roman artefacts, uncover fascinating insights into daily life in the ancient fortress town, and immerse yourself in the origins of Exeter’s remarkable Roman past. Come and get hands‑on with history—your journey into Isca starts here!

This is a drop-in activity for individuals, families and small groups. The activity is fully accessible.

You’ll also have the chance to get up close to one of the most significant Roman finds in Britain: the Seaton Down Hoard.

This extraordinary collection of over 22,000 Roman coins, discovered in East Devon, offers a vivid snapshot of life, economy, and empire in the 4th century. During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to examine selected coins up close and even handle some of them, guided by our knowledgeable volunteers. Explore the stories these coins reveal—from imperial portraits and mint marks to the everyday transactions of people who lived nearly 1,700 years ago.

This activity is not suitable as museum‑led school visit. However, a 20‑minute visit to the Roman handling tables in small groups can be incorporated into a booked teacher led school visit* or you can explore booking a whole day museum-led school visit (10.30am to 2pm).
