‘We The People Are The Work’ is a major visual arts project that explores ideas of power, protest and the public.Over the last few months the project has built connections between the people of Plymouth and five internationally renowned artists, all of whom have created new artworks that explore our engagement with politics and identity.

In the wake of recent global events – from Brexit, to the election of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States, to the recent UK general election – the exhibition explores the shared experiences and social differences that shape our society, as well as our aspirations and fears for the future.

The exhibition is displayed across five venues in the city from 22 September until 18 November. The venues and artists are:

  • Peter Liversidge (UK) at The Council House
  • Matt Stokes (UK) at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art
  • Claire Fontaine (France) at KARST
  • Jose Antonio Vega Macotela and Eduardo Thomas (Mexico) at Peninsula Arts
  • Ciara Phillips (Canada) at Plymouth Arts Centre

Peter Liversidge’s work brings together the ideas and voices of a range of individuals. These are used as the inspiration for a series of placards that you can see being made in the Council House. The signs will be spread around the city, used in a ritual burning in the bonfire on The Hoe on 5 November and in a special Closing Day Party on 18 November. Liversidge will also have a temporary public artwork on the flagpoles on The Hoe in October and November.

Find out more about the other artists and venues involved on the ‘We The People Are The Work’ website.

Special opening hours for the Plymouth Art Weekender: Friday 22 to Sunday 24 September, 11am to 5pm
