The 1960s British Railways Mixed Traction Gala will take place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, 25-27 May. This marks a return to the swinging sixties when steam and diesel worked together. There will be period vehicles and lots of extra trains. Nearer the time you will be able to download the event timetable from the South Devon Railway’s website.

In addition the Devon Diesel Society will be holding its Spring Real Ale festival at Staverton station. Parking is very limited there, so travel by train is strongly recommended.

The South Devon Railway Museum at Buckfastleigh station will be open throughout the event. It will open at 9.30am in the morning, and close at 4.45pm. Current exhibitions include “50 Years After Dr Beeching” and our redisplayed railway tableware. If this sounds mundane, remember that instead of burgers in styrofoam and cans of fizzy drink from the buffet car it was possible to dine in style from silverware with the Great Western Railway’s coat of arms. We even have the right implements to get the meat out of crab’s claws!

Travel on the South Devon Railway is at the normal fares all over the weekend, and you can join or leave our trains at Totnes Littlehempston, Staverton or Buckfastleigh stations. We look forward to sssing you then.
