Joseph Hillier discusses the thinking and processes that led him to create Theatre Royal Plymouth’s ambitious monumental bronze sculpture, Messenger. Commissioned by the Theatre Royal and researched through collaboration with theatre company Frantic Assembly, the piece, depicting a female actor, was intended to be a counterpart to the many sculptures of men in Plymouth and across the UK.
Working across ancient and contemporary technologies, Cornish-born Hillier’s work investigates what it is to be human in this moment. The joint endeavour of the monumental Messenger will be contrasted with more intimate pieces made entirely in the artist’s own studio, revealing a broad practice that scrutinises our fleeting lives through digital technology, lost wax metal casting, motion-capture and observation.
