This year the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon is celebrating the life and work of Harry Juniper as he reaches his 66th year as a potter and much loved guardian of the North Devon sgraffito tradition.
Bideford-based potter Harry Juniper made his first harvest jug in 1958 for the Torrington Town Crier, Burt Waldron, using the traditional sgraffito style of decoration which had been used on North Devon pottery since the 17th century.
Over the years Harry has made thousands of harvest jugs, some with designs depicting political stories, a naughty postcard series, Dad's Army, as well as specially commissioned jugs to celebrate various events and occasions.
Drawing inspiration for his pieces from his inherent sense of humour and from quirky, fun and topical stories locally and nationally, Harry has now been behind the wheel for nearly 66 years and still turns out fantastic pots in his studio at the Ropewalk Gallery in Bideford.
Additional Events as part of this celebration:
Sat 29th June - Nick Juniper will be in the museum from 11-4pm to demonstrate the throwing on a potters wheel.
Thurs 11th 11-4pm Harry Juniper will be in the gallery showing us the art of decorating.
Thurs 18th 7pm-8pm Harry will be talking about the northern Devon pottery tradition.
The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England as part of the New England Cargo project.
