Local historian David Pugsley (histories of Vicars and Patrons of Cullompton church; the 1839 fire in Cullompton; the Honiton Show; the West of England Hound Show) talks us through a gruesome murder and the subsequent trial and execution in 1853. Some of the events will be re-enacted (but not the execution!). David has a special interest in the law: he is the Hon. Archivist of the Western Circuit and wrote the new Dictionary of National Biography entries for seven nineteenth century west country barristers and judges, including John Coleridge, of Ottery St Mary, the future Lord Chief Justice, who made his reputation with a brilliant, but unsuccessful, speech for the defence in this case (which will be re-enacted with the help of the audience). The audience will be asked a number of questions during the talk.
7:30pm at Tiverton Museum Tickets £4.50, including light refreshments. Booking recommended. Doors open 7:00
