Umbrella courtship is a short play written by WFR somewhere during the 1880’s; perhaps penned to give light relief from the hardships of opening the Barnstaple Athenaeum in 1888 ! The content is most certainly light, centring as it does on the contrived, yet charming, courtship, proposal and acceptance of marriage between two couples.

WFR writes the speeches of the loneliness of bachelorhood with a particular passion whilst the two women are unequivocal about their need for a husband. It is tempting to suppose that perhaps WFR had a wish that ‘Love and marriage’ were that simple.
