The festive season is nearly upon us, and I'm delighted to remind you of our last Coffee Time Talk of the year next Wednesday 7th December, which will be given by John Smith on the subject of "The Romans in Exeter".
John has had a varied career including spells at Tesco, the Ordnance Survey, British Aerospace and EIS Industries. Since 1995 he has been active in Roman Heritage and has worked at the Roman sites at Rockbourne and Bignor. He has spoken many times on aspects of Roman history and has a particular interest in the Roman Army - how it recruited, trained and equipped its men, and how it operated and was supplied.
In the talk John will focus on why the Romans came to our region, and the role of the Roman Army at Exeter Fortress and beyond. The talk will be illustrated by a display and explanation of the Roman Soldier's equipment - a fascinating alternative to the usual Powerpoint presentation!
The talk in the Peter Hall will start at 11am, and doors open at 10:30am. Please bring your Membership Card with you. Entry costs £4 to Friends of Fairlynch and £6 to the general public, including coffee, tea, and biscuits.
Finally PLEASE NOTE: The church is still having the car park resurfaced, and the work will probably not be completed in time for the talk. It would be prudent therefore to allow a few extra minutes to find somewhere to park nearby. We are advised that access to the Peter Hall may not be available around the side of the church through the usual entrance but rather from the back door which is accessed around the other side - or rear - of the church.
We hope to welcome many of you next Wednesday for what promises to be a very entertaining talk.
