Mystery object - Totnes Museum

Mystery object? No - not Alan Langmaid - but the rusty metal pole he is holding! It has been brought into Totnes Museum for identification, having been found in the Erme Estuary near Kingston. Alan, who is the Museum's Heritage Officer, stands 5' 9" tall - which gives you some idea of how long this object is- but what is it? If you can help then please let us know!
