As many of you will know, the Museum building dates back to the mid 1880's, when it comprised of the Council stables, Hayloft and Foreman's cottage and in the early 1900's Exmouths steam Fire engine was kept in the yard.
Since the 1930's there had been talk of starting a Museum but this was not put in place until 1984 that a suitable site was found, offered by the then Exmouth Urban district Council. It was in a near derelict state but the community rallied together and a mixture of professional tradesmen and volunteers began major repair work.
The first phase of the Museum was opened by Lord Clinton DL in 1985 and expansion completed in 1986.
The Museum is run soley by volunteers who provide a diverse skillbase and are a fountain of local knowledge.
Within the Museum there are a variety of artifacts that cover many areas of Social History. This is an important resource for the children of Exmouth, covering many aspects of the curriculum – it is also a wonderful way of triggering memories with Dimentia sufferers and it has been commented that being able to interact with some of the displays and the nature of what we have gives a general feel good factor.
Sadly, as you may know, we are in danger of losing this precious part of Exmouth due to the fact that the building is to be sold. The present owners, South West Water, have given us the opportunity to purchase the property for the price of £130,000 and taking into account the age of the property there is also a degree of repair and modernisation required which will amount to a further £70,000.
Aside from this there are the ongoing general running costs of the Museum.
Exmouth Museum is an incredible window into the past that we want to share with young and old alike and is an asset for tourism, there is a year to reach our goal but we need your help in getting there.
We welcome any donations, no matter how small and will be present at many events so look out for us and please spread the word.
Please support us, thank you for your time.
