The life and death of a Devonshire Manor - Totnes Museum

We all love watching and listening as historical mysteries unravel before us, and there's plenty to marvel at - and enjoy - coming up in the first of our autumn/winter lectures which spring into life on October 13th. Local historians Julian Wright and James Bellchambers will be taking us back in time to visit  the ancient medieval manor of North Ford.

First recorded in 1326, it lay adjacent to Dartington at the northern edge of Totnes. Julian tells me the manor has all but disappeared with only a few scattered documents attesting to its importance, but it played a significant role in local history.

We're hoping members, and anyone interested in a good story, will come along to what is described as an 'interactive workshop' during which our speakers will attempt to explain where Northford was, why it came to be and the reasons for its demise.

This first lecture of the season follows the Totnes Museum Society's Annual General Meeting on October 13th, and things get underway at 7.30 in the Methodist Church Hall in Fore Street. It's £1.50 entrance for members and £3.00 for non-members. We'll also be holding a raffle with the chance to win some interesting books kindly donated by David and Charles of Newton Abbot. Always keen to see new people coming along. We don't bite!
