Torquay Museum has been shortlisted for a Major Award.
The Family Friendly Award – #FFMA – is organised by http://www.KidsinMuseums.org.uk and is one of the biggest Museum awards in the U.K. as well as being the only one which is decided completely by children and families who nominate their favourite Museum.
Only 11 Museums in the U.K. have been shortlisted – and Torquay Museum is the only one in the West Country – so this is a huge achievement.
Kids in Museums say that there was tough competition for a place on the shortlist, ‘but what set our eleven fabulous museums apart was their commitment to putting families’ voices at the heart of their organisations, using family feedback to plan everything from their toilets and cafés to their exhibition programmes.’
Many of the shortlisted museums have seen recent increases in their visitor numbers, with family visitors driving the trend and showing the impact, they say, of placing families’ voices at the heart of museums and how family friendliness can make museums for everyone.
Emmajane Avery, Chair of Kids in Museums said: ‘We were really impressed with the high quality of this year’s nominations for the Family Friendly Museum Award and the brilliant family friendly work that is going on in museums all over the country. It’s fantastic that so many museums are using our Manifesto to shape their work with families, children and young people and listening and responding to their feedback.’
